The inking styles of the era simply weren't a good enough match for the delicacy of his linework. (I have exactly the same feeling when I see early pencils by Jack Kirby, which are far more ornate and sinuous than you'd ever expect from seeing only the published pages.)<BR/><BR/>Also, the blog where this drawing was discovered looks interesting too.
