This is a bit of cheat on the theme, as this story actually predates the creation of the Golden Age Supes by about 5 years. Long before they created the man from Krypton and his meek alter ego, Siegel wrote a prose story (under the pseudonym 'Herbert S Fine') called 'Reign of the Superman ' featuring illustrations by Shuster. It was published in a small magazine created by the pair called
Science Fiction: The Advance Guard of Future Civilization, which may be one of the greatest titles ever.

The Superman in this story is of no relation to the hero they would later create. In fact, the story doesn't really have a hero. It's a tale of the greed and callousness of one man and another, simple broken man being corrupted power, and with evil ultimately done in by its own hands.
It's a fairly dark tale with dark characters. You can read it
here. It's an interesting bit of history.

Wow! I look forward to reading that finally. It never occured to me to look for it online.
I also find it odd that in those days of rampant Jewish assimilations, the "secret identity" they assumed, "Herbert S. Fine," is Super-Jewish!
Ooh! Looks like that link's broken.
It works for me. Look it up on wiki, there's a link to it you can try to follow from there.
