A while back I posted a preview image of Gary Frank's run drawing Superman.
I said I thought he looked creepy. Every one said "No, no, that's just a bad image. His other stuff is quite good."
Today I read his first issue of
Action, which includes this image

I'm sorry. Those faces say only one thing to me.

His faces have, indeed, gotten progressively creepier... I like his stuff much better when it was much more simple, like on his Gen 13 run. That said, Newsarama had an article with some of his sketches for the this run, and they were all sorts of awesome.
Where's Matter Eater Lad when you need him?...
I just figured he was reaching for some kind of "retro" vibe and it didn't work out too well with his style. Still, the issue was good at least!
Wow...
The creepiness worked on Supreme Power, but I'm not sure I want the Legion to scream 'psychotic bastards'.
his saturngirl is a beaverfaced bug eyed creepazoid.
why would clarkie want to date her.
I liked the story anyways and its nice to see the Old School Legion finally return. (well not the OLD old school legion who were the parents of the other legion that superboy later joined...or something)
Where's Matter Eater Lad when you need him?...
I think he's "Face Eater Lad" now.
I like the retcon in this story: in this version the Legion doesn't come back to recruit Superboy, but they bring him along reluctantly.
Man, remember when Gary Frank was more like "What If Dale Keown could make a deadline?" Yikes.
I think he's "Face Eater Lad" now.
Now there's a grim-n-gritty XTREME update I can get behind!
I also love the Newsarama sketches Gary did before his run! Of course I absolutely adored the issue once it came out but the staring faces of some of the characters didn't go unnoticed. Especially Saturn Girl's. Eeeep. *hides behind the sofa*
They were probably supposed to look eager and excited but...
For a moment they reminded me of Chucky dolls. But only for a moment. *laugh* The rest of the comic was amazing. That and young Clark looked like Harry Potter. Again. I didn't mind as I really liked the art but the resemblance is there, methinks.
Maybe the Legion should have told Clark: "You're a wizard, Harry." ;)
